At Animal Health and Wellness, we know emergencies and urgent medical concerns never happen at a convenient time. When your pet is sick, injured, or not acting like themselves, it can feel overwhelming very quickly.

Our team is here to help guide you through those moments and determine the best next step for your pet. While we are not a 24-hour emergency hospital, we do see many urgent care cases during our extended business hours and can help direct you to emergency care when needed.

If you are concerned about your pet, please call us first at 631-751-2200. Our team can help determine whether your pet should be seen with us urgently or referred directly to an emergency hospital.

What Is Considered Urgent Care?

Many pets need prompt medical attention without requiring a full emergency hospital visit. We commonly evaluate concerns such as:

• Vomiting or diarrhea
• Ear infections
• Limping or mild injuries
• Skin infections or allergic reactions
• Eye irritation or redness
• Coughing or sneezing
• Decreased appetite
• Minor wounds or hot spots
• Sudden changes in behavior
• Pain or discomfort
• Nail injuries
• Mild allergic reactions

If your pet is experiencing one of these concerns, we may be able to see them the same day depending on availability.

Signs Your Pet May Need Emergency Care Immediately

Some situations require immediate emergency veterinary attention. If your pet is experiencing any of the following, please seek emergency care right away:

• Difficulty breathing
• Collapse or inability to stand
• Active seizures
• Severe trauma or being hit by a car
• Suspected toxin ingestion
• Severe bleeding
• Bloated or distended abdomen
• Repeated vomiting with lethargy
• Difficulty urinating
• Loss of consciousness
• Heat stroke
• Severe pain
• Trouble delivering puppies or kittens

These conditions can become life threatening quickly and are best managed at a full emergency and critical care hospital.

If your pet requires overnight monitoring, surgery, intensive care, advanced imaging, or 24-hour hospitalization, we may refer you one of the following local emergency facilities: Animal Emergency Service, VEG ER for Pets, and Veterinary Referral & Emergency Center of Westbury. These hospitals provide 24 hour emergency and specialty services for critically ill or injured pets.
